As a learner of pixel art, I love using Procreate on my iPad with Apple Pencil.

There are other apps specifically designed for creating pixel art, but Procreate’s smooth experience and gestures are just joyful to use.

The problem of Procreate export

The issue comes when I want to export my pixel art. Procreate’s export feature is great for high-resolution images, but it’s not ideal for pixel art; the result is a blurry image.

The only solution in Procreate is to tediously apply some changes to the canvas and layersjust for this export; that means if you want to keep your artwork intact, you have to undo those changes after the export, and these back-and-forth steps are recorded into the timelapse video.

I don’t think this is a good experience for pixel artists.

Introducing Pixel Companion

So I built Pixel Companion for iPhone and iPad, now on the App Store.

It enables lossless upscaling, optimized specifically for pixel art to prevent blurring and artifacts; you can share your work directly to Pixel Companion without even opening it.

The app also helps explore diverse color palettes online.

I made Pixel Companion to solve my own scaling issues as a pixel art learner. I hope it can assist other artists like you to better create pixel art.

I’m open to feedback to improve the app’s usefulness. Please let me know how Pixel Companion could better meet your needs!!
